Greenfield pharmaceutical projects can attract up to 100% FDI through an automatic pathway. For Brownfield projects, the automatic route permits up to 74% FDI, with higher levels necessitating government approval. From April 2000 to December 2022, the cumulative FDI equity inflow in the Drugs and Pharmaceuticals industry tallied at $21.22 billion, constituting nearly 3% of total FDI across sectors. Indian pharmaceutical companies have garnered a significant portion of the prescription market in the US and EU. India boasts the largest number of FDA-approved plants outside the United States.
